MIDDLE ROADS OF NORTH VIETNAM
7 days, 6 nights. Moderate riding version.

Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau. ~160 km, ~6 h.

Once out of the Red River Delta, which brims with traditional farming activity, we pass through limestone monoliths and into foothills populated by Muong people. We head straight at the main range before breaching a high and beautiful forested pass, which descends into the hidden valley of Mai Chau where we spend the night with friends in a traditional Thai stilt house in Pom Coong village.

The valley of Mai Chau lies between two rivers: the Da River and the Ma River that make it very fertile and rich in varied landscapes, medium mountains, forest, lake, rivers, and infinitude of small footpaths and offer many possibilities of trek. In the valley of Mai Chau and its surroundings are Muong, White Thai, H'mong (live in the high mountain), and the Dao who we meet at the markets or in their villages during trekking, boating or while driving.

Day 2: Mai Chau - Phu Yen. ~160 km, ~5 h.

A nice ride and involves different types of terrains and the forgotten road. There is a 15-minute ferry transfer across Da (Black) river at Van Yen. Phu Yen is a small town, pretty quiet and offer some comfort.

Day 3: Phu Yen - Son La. ~140 km, ~4 h.

Ride on secondary road from Phu Yen to Son La on the forgotten highway 6. This is some of the most scenic roads on this tour. We stop in Son La and prepare for next day long to Than Uyen.

Day 4: Son La - Than Uyen. ~200 km, ~7 h.

Ride and turn before the Pha Din Pass which is still under construction and has nothing to offer to make our way to Than Uyen. The road is wild and bumpy. Between Sapa and Hanoi, we will find an important mountainous massif, almost as high as the Fansipan: the Mu Cang Chai. From the top, we have one of the most beautiful views of North Vietnam.

Day 5: Than Uyen - Sapa. ~120 km, ~5 h.

Short ride but really scenic, some of the best high mountain landscape in North Vietnam. We usually ride through cloud and pass a very beatiful pass near Sapa.

Day 6: Sapa - Vu Linh. ~260 km, ~8 h.

We start the ride from Sapa to Luc Yen, then ride to Vu Linh Dao village in about 2 hours around the lake on small road lined by palm trees and scenic moutain views. It will be dark already. The welcome is exceptional and we hope you will not be too much tired. In fact, this homestay is one of the best we can offer in North Vietnam (the other is Mai Chau).

Day 7: Vu Linh - Hanoi. ~180 km, ~6 h.

The road is easy and relaxing. We will avoid heavy traffic by taking the road via Son Tay.
