Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau. ~160 km, ~6 h.
Once out of the Red River Delta, which brims with traditional farming activity, we pass through limestone monoliths and into foothills populated by Muong people. We head straight at the main range before breaching a high and beautiful forested pass, which descends into the hidden valley of Mai Chau where we spend the night with friends in a traditional Thai stilt house. The valley of Mai Chau lies between two rivers: the Da River and the Ma River that make it very fertile and rich in varied landscapes, medium mountains, forest, lake, rivers, and infinitude of small footpaths and offer many possibilities of trek. In the valley of Mai Chau and its surroundings are Muong, White Thai, H'mong (in the height), and the Dao who we meet at the markets or in their villages during trekking, boating or while driving.
Day 2: Mai Chau - Phu Yen. ~150 km, ~6 h.
We go from Mai Chau to Moc Chau and then to the Da River. After crossing the reservoir of Da river, we ride on secondary road until Phu Yen where we stay in a guesthouse. This ride is on the forgotten old Highway 6 and there is almost no tourist in this area.
Day 3: Phu Yen - Luc Yen. ~180 km, ~7 h.
Descending from Phu Yen to the Red River Delta, then on one of the most busy highways in North Vietnam for about 50km. We will then ride through palm tree forest to Luc Yen, palm tree leaves are materials the local people use to create the roofs of their houses or make the traditional Vietnamese "non" - hats that Vietnamese women wear. We stay in a home stay of Mr Tam, a Tay person living in a Dao village.
Day 4: Luc Yen - Vu Linh. ~70 km, ~2 h.
Ride to Vu Linh in about 2 hours around the lake on small road lined by palm trees and scenic moutain views. Vu Linh's Dao village is where we spend the night in traditional house on stilts. Superb work of wood. The houses are superb. In addition, the exceptional greeting does not leave anybody "indemne".
Another option is to ride around the lake and arrive in Vu Linh early in the afternoon, then take a boat on the lake.
Day 5: Vu Linh - Hanoi. ~180 km, ~7 h.
Drive back to Hanoi in 7 hours via Son Tay to avoid the heavy traffic on the main road. Arrive in Hanoi around 5 pm.
