This loop takes in some of the most spectacular scenery of northern Vietnam. It is rugged mountainous country, with rocky outcrops, terraced rice fields and little or no motorised traffic.
Night 1: Hanoi - Lao Cai - Night train. ~10 h.
Departure from Hanoi at 9.30 pm.
Arrival in Lao Cai at 6.10 am.
Day 1: Than Uyen - Sapa. ~140 km, ~5 h.
Get off the train and have breakfast in Lao Cai town. Head up in the direction of Sapa on 34 km mountain climb. Ride on the Hoang Lien range, of which Fansipan is the peak. Moderately hard riding through a beautiful landscape.
Stop overnight in a guesthouse in Than Uyen.
Day 2: Than Uyen - Nghia Lo. ~150 km, ~6 h.
Wild mountain road! We descend from the Mu Cang Chai massif, almost as high as the Fansipan: From the top, we have some of the most magnificent views of northwest Vietnam and the Red River delta.
Night in Hotel.
Day 3: Nghia Lo - Hanoi. ~180 km, ~7 h.
Easy drive on sealed country road. Drive through rural areas with beautiful terraced rice fields along the road. Nice and quiet cruising.
Arrive in Hanoi around 5 pm.
