9 days, 8 nights.
Day 1: Hanoi - Na Khan. ~180 km, ~8 h.
Quite a long drive but easy (early departure is better) from Hanoi to Na Khan 180 km. The road is sealed all the way until Bac Kan and the last part from Bac Kan to Na Khan is wild and little bumpy. Na Khan is a Tay village, lost in the middle of the primitive forest. Mr. Lo, the chief of the village will welcome us in his house.
Day 2: Na Khan - Ba Be. ~50 km, ~2 h.
Short drive from Na Khan to Ba Be on bumpy road. Lunch at our captain's house (Mr. Dang, we call him Zi Dang). Easy boating on the lake and river. Go to market (if it is the day you arrive). Stop at waterfall, beautiful swim…Ong pirate, the chief of Dau Dang waterfall where we enjoy dinner. Down the waterfall, we could visit the village and a small school (only few pupils during the summer). We propose to stay in the stilt house of forest guards.
Day 3: Ba Be - Quang Hoa. ~170 km, ~7 h.
Cross Ba Be lake to come back to our captain's house. Beautiful ride up to Cao Bang province. Few passes from where you can dominate the area. The road is easy but many curves. We can stop a lot. All together, stop for drinks and food it should be an 8-hour journey. Then ride 1 more hour to reach the beautiful village of Quang Hoa, in the middle of a mountain cirque. This is the territory of Nung An people. Spend the night in our friend's house.
Day 4: Quang Hoa - Na Tau - Quang Hoa. ~30 km, ~1 h.
Na Tau is a completely unknown area that we propose to discover it by raft and motorbike. Rivers and waterfalls everywhere are extremely beautiful and wild. It is only 15 km from Quang Hoa.
Day 5: Quang Hoa - Ban Gioc - Quang Hoa. ~100 km, ~3 h.
Having obtained permission from the border police, we make our way through spectacular scenery to Vietnam's most impressive waterfalls. Weather permitting we can swim right up to where the 50 m high falls hit the river.
Day 6: Quang Hoa - Mau Son. ~160 km, ~7 h.
Drive from Quang Hoa to Mau Son on the bumpy road with a stop for lunch in Lang Son. Mau Son is 30 km away from Lang Son, 1.541m above sea level. Night in the guesthouse of Mau Son Resort.
Day 7: Mau Son - Bai Chay. ~180 km, ~7 h.
We have a long drive mainly on secondary road, passing many coalmines along the road. We hope you are not covered in coal dust when we arrive in Halong City (the new name of Bai Chay).
Day 8: Halong Bay cruising. Sleep on boat.
Relax in the morning to recover from the long ride yesterday. There are two options:
1. Join a group trip at noon. Depart by boat to Halong Bay, start cruise and check in cabins. Lunch on boat, enjoy deluxe Vietnamese set menu. Transfer by tender from boat to Surprising Cave. Enjoy kayaking and swimming, or relaxing on the boat. Dinner served with Vietnamese food. Evening activities – choose from optional evening activities: enjoy movie, sing karaoke or join squid fishing with our crew (in case the weather is good).
2. Book a private boat and cruise in Halong Bay. Sleep on boat. This option costs extra and we will let you know the cost if you want this upgrade.
Day 9: Halong - Hanoi. ~160 km, ~5 h.
Two options with the cruise:
1. Transfer by tender from boat to Titov island, swimming or just relaxing. Continue cruise and refresh onboard and come back to Bai Chay. Check-out cabins and pay for your drinks. Lunch at Thang Long restaurant in Halong city (or on boat).
2. Continue cruising in Halong Bay. Lunch on boat and return at noon. This option costs extra and we will let you know the cost if you want this upgrade.
Pick up the bike(s) and ride back to Hanoi on highway 18 and then 1B. Arrive in Hanoi around 5pm.
