Day 1: Hanoi - Nghia Lo. ~200 km, ~7 h.
Easy ride on sealed road. Drive through rural areas with beautiful rice field along the road.
Day 2: Nghia Lo - Sapa. ~230 km, ~6-7 h.
The road is wild and bumpy. We go through the massif of Mu Cang Chai, almost as high as the Fansipan. From the top, we have one of the most beautiful views of North Vietnam. Arrive in Sapa in the afternoon. Wild and bumpy roads.
Day 3: Sapa - Luc Yen. ~160 km, ~5 h.
Sunday market in the morning. Easy road to Luc Yen. The landscapes are very varied, always skirting the border to finish in triumph in the valley of the palm trees of Luc Yen, at the Dao and Tay. Homestay in our friendly Tay village.
Day 4: Luc Yen - Hanoi. ~230 km, ~7 h.
Easy road back to Hanoi. Be prepare for the trip to Halong Bay tomorrow.
Day 5: Hanoi - Bai Chay - Halong. ~170 km, ~5 h.
Drive to Bai Chay in 5 hours. Good sealed road. A traditional junk is waiting to take us to cruise in Halong Bay. Lunch with seafood on the boat. Boating to Thien Cung cave, fishing village and then through myriads of limestone to Ba Trai Dao (Three Peach Fruit Islet). Swimming and sleep here.
Day 6: Halong - Cat Ba - Hai Phong - Hanoi: ~120 km, ~2 h 30 m.
Cruise to Cat Ba. Cat Ba is the far end of Halong Bay. Cat Ba still live from the resource that the sea offers. The tourism is developed and of high quality. The Cat Ba Bay is a condensed of Halong Bay, its labyrinth of limestone so dense that it is difficult to imagine we are on the sea.
We created this itinerary - the floating village Van Gia. They are our friends and the relation with them is intimate, even knowing that some companies now also pass through there.
Finally yet importantly, Monkey Island (Cat Dua Islet) was totally ignored by mass tourism when we propose to stop there. It has got nothing special beside the fact that there is nobody except monkeys and one family who takes care of their security.
Arrive Cat Ba in time for the ferry at 1.30 pm to Hai Phong and drive back to Hanoi on Highway 5. Arrive in Hanoi around 6 pm.
